Playing with Color in Scratchboard

I'm experimenting with a new technique (new to me at least) in scratchboard.  I've acquired some Ampersand inks and have been playing with them on a white clayboard ground.  All this is pretty haphazard because I am experimenting with...
  1. laying down the color first, then covering with black, then engraving to create depth.
  2. creating the design in black, then engraving, then tinting with progressive layers of weak ink
  3. doing both the above:  color, then black, then engrave, then more color or black, then engrave.

I actually am finding this more difficult than straight engraving on a black board.  We shall see.  I seem to be having trouble with values so far.  Stay tuned.
