In celebration of Christmas, here is one of my favorite painters' depiction of the Annunciation. John William Waterhouse uses a palette that is bright and open. I like how he used the red, white, and blue of many illuminators of the early renaissance rather than the heavy, somber hues of later classical religious works . I love the romantic realism of the painters of his time. You can see the references to the Middle Ages, even in a Mid-eastern setting such as this. Notice the difference in the halos. Interesting.
